DIY: Magazine Collage

I'm always up for an afternoon full of arts and crafts. I did this project a while ago, but I am finalllllly getting around to sharing it with you! A friend of mine posted a picture on Instagram of a collage that she had made on a canvas made out of strips from magazines. It was super cute, and I thought it would be a great addition to the wall in my apartment. For the past few weeks I have been suffering with terrible back problems, so while all my friends were out hitting the bars and recovering from their hangovers during frosh week, I was laying in bed cutting up the September Issue of Vogue.

I thought that this art project was super cute, and pretty easy to do, so I thought I would share it with you!

First things first, I went to Walmart and picked up a few supplies:
  • 16 x 20 inch Stretched Canvas
  • Magazine(s) - I chose the 902 Page September Issue of Vogue.. I felt very bad cutting up such a beautiful magazine!
  • Modge Podge (I chose the Matte formula, because I didn't want it to look too shiny)
  • Paint Brush or Foam Brush
  • Cardstock (Optional)
Other supplies that you will  need:
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pen

The next thing I did was flip through my magazines and rip out pages that had bright colours, an interesting pattern, or something that I thought would look good. I then flipped over the page (I didn't want to draw lines on the side that I wanted to use) and put a little tick mark every half of an inch. I then drew lines straight across, and cut the strips.

Once I had a large collection of strips I began to lay them out on the canvas to see how many more strips I would need. I then decided that I wanted to put a heart cut out in the upper left hand corner to make it more interesting (You could always but a star, or an infinity symbol, of whatever you like!). I cut out a heart out of white cardstock.

I then painted small sections at a time with modge podge, and began the tedious task of gluing down strips.

I am so happy with how it turned out, and it looks super cute up on my wall. If my instructions weren't clear enough please comment below, and I would be happy to answer any questions that you may have!

Happy Crafting!

  1. I've been wanting something cool to do with old magazines for a while - awesome idea

    1. thanks! although i can't fully take the credit, aha :)

  2. Did you seal it all over in the end after you glued everything down?

    1. Yes - I sealed the strips with the modge podge as I was gluing them down :)

  3. Okay, and the modge podge was the glue too? :)

    1. Yes! Modge Podge is a specifc arts & crafts glue, that also acts as a sealer & finisher! You can find it a local craft store or WalMart! :)

  4. Thanks so much! Can't wait for my daughter to do this for her art project! :))) She will use dance magazines, as that is her passion. Thanks again!
